Geely's Galaxy L7 PHEV could be your next mid-sized SUV as it is revealed as another rival to the BYD Sealion 6 and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Here's what we know

Australia is bracing itself for a multitude of electric cars to arrive from new brands and we’ve just had a peek at Geely’s latest Galaxy L7 SUV, which we could be driving on our roads in the next 12 months.

Thanks to China’s regulations, which require car manufacturers to file their plans for new models, we’ve been able to get a glimpse many times of vehicles about to hit the market in the near future. And with the number of Chinese brands such as MG and BYD that are proving so popular in Australia, it means we can get an early idea of what may come our way.

The latest example of this is Geely, which recently filed its plans and specifications for the upcoming Galaxy L7 plug-in hybrid SUV. Geely is a Chinese automotive powerhouse and the owner of many car brands including Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Link & Co, and Zeekr.

Geely’s L7 is a sleek and prestigious looking mid-sized SUV with plug-in hybrid powertrain and it could be on the cards for Australia in 2025.

From a design perspective the new Galaxy L7 is 10mm longer than the previous model at 4710mm end-to-end, with a restyled front bumper. 

Powering the Galaxy L7 is Geely’s new Thor plug-in hybrid set-up, which combines 1.5-litre 82kW four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor. The combined output has not be detailed but we do know the battery used is 18.4kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack and fuel consumption is claimed to be 4.9L/100km with an electric driving range of up to 93km.

2025 Geely Galaxy L7

Geely will arrive in Australia in 2025 and has confirmed it will launch the brand with the EX5 mid-sized electric SUV. On top of that Zeeker, which is owned by Geely will launch imminently in Australia with its compact electric X SUV. Geely owned Volvo and Polestar are already making enormous in-roads with EVs here, too. 

In many ways Geely is the Volkswagen of China with so many brands under its roof and there appears to be a showdown looming between it and other big Chinese brands such as BYD, which has already achieved much success here with models such as the Atto 3, Seal and Sealion 6.
