Skoda has refreshed its Octavia sedan and wagon line-up with design, technology and safety upgrades, in addition to a new entry-level Select variant that brings the entry price down by $1000.
The Octavia sedan line-up now commences from a national drive-away price of $41,490 for the Select, down from the previous entry price of $42,490.
That's roughly the same entry price as the Toyota Camry, which starts at $39,990 before on-road costs. It's slightly more than the Mazda 6, though, which starts at $36,990 before on-road costs.
For an additional $2500, or $43,990, customers can upgrade to a wagon body shape, which increases the boot size across the range from 600-litres to 640-litres.
An upgraded Sportline and RS variant will join the line-up in the first quarter of next year.
As standard, the upgraded Octavia gets a new 10-inch digital driver’s display, a bigger 13-inch multimedia display with new “easier-to-use” software, satellite navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
It also gets wireless charging with 15W fast recharge capacity, active ventilation, voice control and an eight-speaker sound system.
The Select gets a new ‘Lodge’ design theme, emphasised by the cloth upholstery on the dashboard, redesigned 18-inch alloys, revised LED headlight and taillight designs, as well as new front and rear bumpers.
The Select will be powered by Skoda’s 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which is capable of 110kW/250Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. It delivers a commendable 0-100km/h time of 8.7 seconds.
Reverse autonomous emergency braking (AEB) has joined the long list of safety features that are standard across the range, which includes front AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop/go function, semi-autonomous travel assist with traffic jam assistance, lane assist with adaptive lane guidance, emergency assist, side assist, rear traffic alert, exit warning system, plus front and rear parking sensors.
Other standard features include LED taillights with dynamic indicators, dusk-sensing headlights, rain sensing wipers, auto dimming rear view mirror, keyless push-button start, electronically retractable door mirror with driver’s auto dimming mirror, interior LED ambient lighting and a leather-appointed steering wheel with paddle shifters.
Skoda’s ‘Simply Clever’ features on the Octavia range also include a driver’s door umbrella and holder, a removable waste bin in the driver’s door, tablet holders mounted on the back of the front seats, plus cargo divide and net systems.
There are seven paint colours to choose from as standard, or customers can opt for Velvet Red Metallic premium paint for an additional $770.
The Select variant will be available from dealers from November and will sell alongside remaining Octavia stock until Skoda transitions over to the updated model next year.
