Punchy new affordable luxury car has arrived: 2025 BMW 120 and BMW 220 land in Australia with more power and equipment to battle the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class

BMW has padded out its most affordable model ranges in Australia.
The German brand has added a new mid-tier variant to its 1 Series hatchback and 2 Series Gran Coupe range.
Dubbed the 120 and 220, the variants create a new step between the base 118 and 218 versions and the performance focused M135 and M235 range toppers.

The 120 is priced from $60,600 (before on-road costs), which is $3000 more than the base 118. And the 220 has a similar step up in price at $62,900.
Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 150kW and 300Nm, which is a big step up from the 115kW/230Nm outputs from the base versions' 1.5-litre turbo-petrol motor.
It is matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that drives the front wheels.
The new mid-tier models have identical specification, with key highlights including 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights and the BMW M Sport package. BMW’s adaptive M suspension is standard, too.
Inside there is a head-up display, 10.25 digital instrument display and a 10.7-inch multimedia screen.
Digital radio, smartphone mirroring and synthetic leather wrapped seats, which are power adjustable in the front row. The drive and front seat passenger have sports seats as standard as well as a seat heating function.
There is no spare tyre, with owners having to make do with a fiddly repair kit.
