The 30e version of the BMW X3 family SUV doesn’t just fill a medium price-point (in this case $102,500) it’s the model that most fully adopts the mantra of electrification for this model. Instead of a mild hybrid, the 30e goes all the way with a plug-in hybrid driveline based on a 2.0-litre petrol engine, an electric motor and a 19.7kWh battery pack.
BMW claims an official fuel consumption figure of just 1.6 litres per 100km, as well as the ability to run for up to 91km on electricity only. Charging on an 11kW outlet should take about two hours, 15 minutes. An eight-speed transmission and all-wheel-drive complete the mechanical package which tops out at 220kW and 450Nm.
The X3 packaging consists of a five-door SUV and is a five-seat vehicle with no provision for a third-row seat.
Beyond the base 20’s standard equipment, the 30e adds 20-inch alloy wheels, heated second-row seats, sun blinds, parking assistant and a panoramic sunroof.
Safety includes all the latest driver-aid technology including auto emergency braking (AEB), rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors and cameras.
The X3 range can tow a maximum of 2000kg on a braked trailer.
