The GTI is the Golf line-up’s fastest, most sporty variant to use front-wheel drive.
It also builds on a rich tradition as the make and model that arguably invented the whole hot-hatch genre decades ago.
Instead of the 1.4-litre engine, the Golf GTI uses a 2.0-litre unit with a turbocharger. It’s a familiar, carry-over engine, but this time has been retuned to give 195kW of power.

It drives through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and there’s no manual transmission option these days.
Inside, the retro theme continues with tartan seat coverings, although there’s an optional leather package that also brings powered and heated and ventilated front seats.
Alloy wheels measuring 19 inches are standard with this upgrade (previously 18 inch) and the new wheel design harks back to the old days of the much-loved Golf GTI Mark 5.
The driving experience is all about performance but the natural balance of the car means it’s as quick point to point as many a mega-dollar performance car. It’s also easy to drive and confidence inspiring.
VW claims a combined fuel economy number of 7.2 litres per 100km for the GTI, but you do need to fill up with the more expensive 95-octane fuel.
The standard Volkswagen five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty applies and servicing is set down for every 12 months or 15,000km.
Safety is comprehensive with the usual driver aids as well as a new-for-this-model nine airbags including a front-centre bag.
