At $38,690, the Golf Life opens the batting for the facelifted Volkswagen hatchback range.
That’s actually $500 less than the previous entry-level Golf, but there have been equipment casualties along the way. Those include the loss of embedded sat-nav and ambient lighting and the air-conditioning system is now a single-zone deal.
While the facelift across the Golf range is limited, it does include mildly tweaked front and rear fascias and the driver interface has been simplified and streamlined.
Power comes from the previous Golf’s 1.4-litre turbocharged engine with 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque. It’s teamed with an eight-speed conventional automatic transmission and drives the front wheels. VW claims an official combined fuel consumption figure of 6.3 litres per 100km, but you do need to use 95-octance fuel.
Even though it’s the entry-level car, the Life gets a good safety package including extra airbags this time around for a total of nine, including a front-centre bag. Autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assistance are all included. You do, however, need to pay more for the 360-degree camera.
The Life comes with VW’s five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and servicing occurs every 12 months or 15,000km, which ever comes first.
