A Mazda CX-5 would be the best bet, and gets The Tick, but also look at a Subaru Forester which is more car-like and will be better around town when you're not towing.

Definitely go for the Volvo. Apart from the safety gear, it's well built, well equipped and drives well.

Leave lexus alone
I WOULD expect the engine is suitable for conversion, but I haven't been able to find anyone who has converted a Lexus. I wouldn't be the guinea pig.
