Audi A1 or VW Golf?

Audi was caught up in the same DSG automatic transmission problems that afflicted VW, but you would hope that those problems have been sorted out on the later models such as the 2015 car you're looking to buy. Apart from that doubt the A1 is generally a sound car. As for servicing costs the A1 is about the same as the VW.

Historically you are correct but the current situation is that Audi mostly uses “tool boxes" of platforms and parts developed by parent company Volkswagen. It dresses them up nicely and adds quality but it's still a fact that an Audi A1 is a VW Polo under the skin and that an A3 is a Golf.

It might be misleading in that it suggests that it should work on all doors, but it's done that way for safety so anyone with malicious intent can't jump into the car through the other doors while you're getting yourself organized and getting into the car yourself. If you feel sufficiently aggrieved about it you could complain, but I wouldn't be complaining about it myself.
