Contributing Journalist

Raised by dingoes and, later, nuns, Marcus (aka ‘Crafty’) had his first taste of adventure as a cheeky toddler on family 4WD trips to secret fishing spots near Bundaberg, Queensland. He has since worked as a journalist for more than 20 years in Australia, London and Cape Town and has been an automotive journalist for 18 years.

This bloke has driven and camped throughout much of Australia – for work and play – and has written yarns for pretty much every mag you can think of.

The former editor of 4X4 Australia magazine, Marcus is one of the country’s most respected vehicle reviewers and off-road adventure travel writers.

The Toyota LandCruiser Prado is hugely popular. It’s been around for donkey’s years but it’s still one of Australia’s top-selling large 4WD wagons. It has a great reputation as an off-road touring platform, because it is so capable, so roomy (great for fitting all of your camping gear) and it is so...Read more
Mid-size SUVs are very popular and the Honda CR-V is one of the segment's real contenders. The revised Honda CR-V line-up is expected here mid-year, but until then you might consider this: the CR-V VTi-S all-wheel drive . It's a roomy five-seater wagon that looks pretty good and has plenty of...Read more
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has been updated for 2020: it has Mitsubishi's ‘Dynamic Shield' front grill, it's had a slap and tickle on its rear end – with shorter tail-light sections the most noteworthy tweak – and it also has a revised media unit inside. It's been nice to drive in the past – on...Read more
The Isuzu D-Max is one of the quiet achievers in the Australian Ute market. It sells pretty well – it was top five of the best-selling utes in Australia last year – with 16,892 sold – and it has a stack of fans. This is a proper purpose-built ute – and that's refreshing in this day and age. But how...Read more

The Holden Colorado Z71 is a lifestyle-accessorised version of the Colorado. It has stickers, a sailplane sports bar and a stack of other Z71-specific gear … but underneath it’s still a Colorado. And there’s nothing wrong with that – the Colorado itself is a quiet achiever in the ute market: it has...Read more
There's a lot of hype about the Gladiator, Jeep's first ute in a long time, and there's a lot riding on its anticipated success. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Australia is hoping the Gladiator can take on Australia's segment leaders, such as the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger, or at least rise to...Read more

The LDV T60 was rather a pleasant surprise at its Australian launch in 2017. It was a Chinese-built dual-cab ute that actually looked pretty good, seemed well-built, drove nicely, was adequately capable off-road and it was sharply priced and well-equipped. Now, a few years down the track, the big...Read more

When I first reviewed the Toyota Fortuner – way back in 2016 when it was launched here – I thought it was pretty good: a solid, if unspectacular, seven-seat 4WD. For a ute-based wagon it wasn’t a game-changer, but it was a decent effort. Toyota’s given the Fortuner a few upgrades since it's launch...Read more

Much has been penned about the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon’s effectiveness off-road – and we’ve been responsible for a fair chunk of that, having done plenty of hard-core four-wheel driving in it – but we haven’t towed with it … until now. So, how did it do? To find out, read on.Read more
