Are SUVs as safe as other cars?

Asked by G. Anderson

The ANCAP safety ratings seem to ignore the laws of physics. How can a narrow-track, high centre-of-gravity SUV be as stable as a wide-track low-riding sedan. Surely a five-star rated Ford Ranger will roll over much more readily than its Falcon sedan cousin.

You are right that SUVs are more prone to a rollover, but it's not tested under ANCAP and the electronic stability control compulsory in Australia is partly intended to reduce the chance of any vehicle running off the road.
