Ask Smithy Xtra Mazda 323 revs and stalls

Asked by Ian Lipke

First thing in the morning when the motor in my Mazda 323 is cold I can reverse out of my driveway but, when I change to 'drive' the motor revs and the car does not move. Shortly after, the car operates normally and will continue to do so for the rest of the day. I have been told I need a new coil. Does this make sense, or do I have a transmission issue?

If the coil were faulty I would expect it to play up all the time, not just first thing in the morning. Get the transmission checked, particularly the fluid level.
