Ask Smithy Xtra Unpicking Falcon rust
Asked by Rob Bantin.
Rust is appearing in the C-pillar area of my much-loved ED Falcon XR-6. A panel beater told me he could repair it, but the rust would only return again unless he unpicked the whole quarter panel. But he also told me not to bother, that it's just a Ford and I shouldn?t waste my money. I am not a professional, but I think differently, can you advise me before I start spending REAL money?

30 Mar 2010I would tend to agree with the panel beater, that you’re likely to be throwing away money by attempting to repair the rust you can see. There is a good chance there is more rust under the surface that you can’t see, so any repairs you might do are not likely to get all of it, unless you do as he says and fit a new quarter panel. If it was a classic car I would say, go for it, but an ED XR-6 isn’t in that league yet.
