I have been advised of a temperature sensor fault with the DSG Module in my 2005 VW Golf TDI and have been quoted over $4000 for a replacement. There is apparently no option to service the module; it simply has to be replaced, which I think that this is an outrageous cost to impose on a customer for a "throw-away" part! Of particular concern was the fact that the fault symptom was a neutral state in the gear selector resulting in the inability to move the vehicle whilst turning right at an intersection. It was quite an unnerving and a potentially dangerous experience! Are you aware of any other instances of this fault occurring with VW DSG transmissions? Also, is the car industry headed down the path of "disposable" modules rather than serviceable ones, leaving car owners to fund expensive replacements when a sub-component fails?
Answered by CarsGuide
5 Oct 2010The industry is definitely moving towards using non-serviceable components and has been for many years. The theory is that they can better control repairs to the car by simply replacing a failed component rather than relying on the skill or lack of skill of individual operators. One possible way you could get the module at a cheaper price is to shop around specialist VW dealers, many of whom import parts directly from Europe and can offer them at a lower price. We haven’t had any other reports of this issue, but perhaps other owners could tell us of any problems they have had.
