Best second-hand hatchbacks?

Asked by Tom Jacobs

I took your advice 18 months ago and bought a new Hyundai i30 for my wife, which has been terrific. I now need to buy a second-hand hatchback with a budget of $8000-$9000. I have seen some 2009-10 model i30s in that price range. Are those older i30 models good value or should I be looking at something else? Reliability and the cost of running and maintenance are the main considerations.

An older i30 should be fine, and far better value than a Corolla that everyone chases. You also should check out a more recent Hyundai i20 or Kia Rio. They are smaller but still good cars and would have some factory warranty.
