Nissan Dualis 2011: CVT shuddering

Asked by Susie Smith

I am having trouble with my 2011 Nissan Dualis auto and Nissan seems to be dismissing the problem as "characteristic of the CVT". There is a very strong and constant shudder when I'm travelling at 50-70 km/h. I first reported this problem two or three weeks after taking delivery of it new and tried to get something done about it. Eventually Nissan replaced an engine mount, saying that it would not fix the problem, but should reduce. For some time it was not as noticeable, but by the last service – at 52,000km – I again reported it as bad and requested that it be fixed. They then replaced a second engine mount, but as my vehicle was just out of warranty I was told that it would cost me this time. I had some very strong words with Head Office and my dealer stating that the problem came with the vehicle, and as I have regularly complained about it I should not have to pay anything. I won that round. Nissan Customer Service has tried to tell me "this is characteristic of the vehicle". I replied that we should have been told that when looking at purchasing the vehicle with this transmission. The woman said that "Nissan cannot guess what people's driving habits are and therefore dealers do not need to give information about this." She said that Nissan have done the engine mounts and there is nothing more to do. I contacted Consumer Protection who suggested I put in a formal report/complaint about it, which I shall do.

While the CVT is a brilliant concept there have been problems with turning the concept into a reliable functioning gearbox, despite 40 years of trying. Shuddering can be a problem with them, and while Nissan might want to dismiss it as a characteristic of the transmission, it's only because they don't know how to fix it. You should do as it has been suggested, make a formal complaint, and pursue a settlement through official channels.
