Extra brumby gear

Asked by Harry Bayman

I have been told that towards the end of its production life Subaru fitted the Brumby with a five-speed gearbox. Is this correct and if so does the five-speed make it a much better proposition?

The Brumby had a four-speed manual right to the end. It's possible someone has fitted a five-speed to improve highway performance, but it would have been a private conversion.
