Ford Falcon 2009: Power steering whine

Asked by David Foreman, e-mail.

My 2009 BF Falcon MKIII wagon has only done 41,000 km, but the power steering pump has a whine that can be heard over the engine noise at 2000 rpm and above. The dealer says it's normal and they even hear whines on later model cars, but I previously owned a 2002 BA wagon and the whine in that was much worse. I bought a replacement for that and fitted it and there was no more whine, so I know what a new one should sound like. I contacted Ford and asked them if they made cars that make this whine in the power steering pump and they just fobbed me off.

I'm not surprised Ford fobbed you off. You asked a question they would not be prepared to answer. Power steering pump whine is quite common, as the dealer told you and you discovered for yourself by replacing the noisy pump on your BA. The only way to fix it is to replace the pump, as you did on your earlier car.
