Ford warranty issue

Asked by Geoff Haerewa

In 2012 I purchased a Ford Territory Titanium and a Ford Focus Trend, both new. The Focus has had numerous gearbox problems, which Ford has fixed under warranty. In January this year the Territory came up with a transmission failure fault and stopped. We live in Derby WA and called Ford in Melbourne who advised us to get it to the nearest Ford Dealer, in Broome, 225km away. We delivered the vehicle to the dealer by truck for diagnostic testing. It has only done 67,000km since new with regular servicing, but I must admit that the first two services were not carried out because of location. Ford advised after numerous phone calls that the vehicle was out of warranty and they may assist with the replacement of the gearbox. I would believe that a gearbox, which cannot be serviced anyway, would need replacing after only 67,000km. We are very disappointed with Ford for not replacing the gearbox at their cost.

We'd like to think that our cars would last longer and not give us trouble, but the reality is quite different to that. The ZF 6-speed gearbox is a troublesome one that can fail, as yours appears to have done. But as Ford has pointed out to you your Territory is out of warranty, although that doesn't end Ford's responsibility to back the product. You could pursue a full payment for replacing the transmission from Ford, but I doubt you would have any success. Should you choose to do that contact your state Consumer Affairs people in Perth for advice and support. But in my view your best course of action would be to accept Ford's offer of part payment.
