Toyota Camry 2010: Globes blowing on hybrid taxis

Asked by Alan Watson

I read with interest the question from Kevin Macarthur regarding globe life in his Toyota Hybrid. For a number of years I was the National Manager for Automotive Globes representing one of the worlds largest suppler of automotive globes to carmakers until retirement last year. The average life is 1600 running hours for a headlight globe running on low beam - it's lower on high beam - so on a taxi on the road for long periods at night he can expect to use more globes than the private driver. Let's say the average night time hours of a taxi is seven hours multiplied by seven days a week is 49 hours, so the globes should last around 33 weeks before replacement. It may be that in a hybrid car when the electric side kicks in that there could be a spike in voltage causing the filament to overheat and break. I am sure if Toyota talks to who ever their suppler is will be able to do an analysis to find the cause.

Good information, which could help explain the failures of globes on the Camry hybrid. Last we heard Toyota was looking into the failures on this particular car.
