I OWN a 1990 NA Fairlane that is for sale. It has travelled only 125,000km and there is nothing wrong with it, but I just can't resist the urge to sell up and buy that V8 I have wanted for so long. I have not long turned 21 and am considering a 1994 ED Fairmont Ghia with the 5.0-litre Windsor V8. This model stands out because of the leather sports seats and sports suspension, also a priority. I have heard that the Windsor engine is all steel, which strikes me as being more reliable than the Falcon six with its steel block and alloy head. What do you think? And do these engines agree with gas? What should I look for?

15 Apr 2004SOUNDS as if you have a nice Fairlane there, Steve, and it seems a shame to sell it when it has such low mileage and is giving you good service. Instead of buying the V8 I'd consider an EB Falcon XR6 because I reckon you'd prefer the performance of that over the Ghia. Sure, the leather and the sports suspension sound great, but the XR6 will eat it for breakfast. Returning to the V8, the Windsor is a good, solid engine that gives little trouble and is good when converted to LPG. As you say, it is all steel, with cast-iron block and heads.
