Going out on patrol

Asked by Lucas Jones

I WANT to buy a mid-1980s to early 1990s four-wheel-drive, and have my eyes on a Nissan Patrol Mor GQ, or the Ford equivalent. It will be used as my daily driver to commute to the city each day, and it will also be used to ferry kids, go shopping, and the occasional weekend away. I can spend up to $10,000, and it has to be generally good on fuel for the daily driving. Would an unleaded Mor GPatrol or Ford Maverick be the way to go? I'd prefer a 4.2-litre manual Patrol, but don't know much about them. Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

THE MQ is really getting a little long in the tooth, so I would recommend you think about a GQ, though you will find it hard to fit one within your budget. Going by your description of the sort of driving you will be doing I would advise against the Patrol. It sounds like a very expensive way of getting to the city, ferrying the kids around and going shopping, with only an occasional weekend away. Go for a regular car -- it will be better suited to your needs and be less expensive to run. If you must go for a Patrol, buy the 4.2-litre petrol GQ.
