Asked by Helen Kitson
I AM considering buying a small convertible, but I have no experience with this type of car. I'm thinking of a Peugeot 306 N5 MY01, the last model with the soft top. Are canvas roofs a problem regarding wear? The driver's door on one car I looked at had dropped a few centimetres. Is this just an adjustment or is it a sign of another problem?

12 Jun 2008GENERALLY, soft-tops are more durable than they once were, and there are no reports of trouble with the Peugeot roof. I haven't seen any on the road that are faded or torn, so I think you'd be safe to buy one. The door issue is another thing. A convertible body is generally not as stiff as a sedan's, which has a steel roof to hold it all together. One of the things that can happen is the doors will drop. It could be a matter of adjustment, but I would avoid a car with sagging doors.
