Golf goes clunk

Asked by Luke Reiser

I HAVE had problems with rough downshifting when coming to a stop in my 2007 VW Golf GT Sport TDI with the DSG gearbox, which also produces a very noticeable clunking noise. My original dealer replaced the gearbox computer without any effect and told me they have had to replace gearboxes. When the problem persisted at the 60,000km service they checked it again and arranged to replace the gearbox. Though this was supposedly done I didn't receive any paperwork for the replaced gearbox and I'm still having the same problem. After changing dealers the gearbox was reset and recalibrated, but to my frustration it has started again. I would like VW to fix it once and for all and am quite happy for them to have it for a month or so to do it. The car has done only 79,500km and is causing more problems than the Daewoo Lanos I owned previously. It's so frustrating that I'm considering changing brands. Should I go back to the dealer or go higher up the chain at VW?

YOU should definitely go back to your dealer and demand that it be fixed. It's still under warranty so it's important that it's fixed before the warranty expires. I would leave it with the dealer to fix and don't take it back until they can demonstrate to your satisfaction that it's fixed. It wouldn't hurt to contact VW directly to express your frustration.
