I WRITE about the failure of fifth gear in a GU Patrol. In my experience it's a common problem, occurring more in 3.0-litre diesels than in the 4.2-litre. The problem usually starts as a slight shimmy only in fifth gear and eventually fifth gear lets go altogether. Nissan dealers I approached denied the problem, but a gearbox repairer tells me it has fixed quite a few. The failure is due to a weakness in the case hardening on the shaft that fifth gear slides on. It usually happens above 150,000km and on vehicles that do a lot of towing.

16 Feb 2007WE RECEIVED quite a few emails from readers who have experienced the problem or know of it. Nissan released a service fix for it that appears to do the job.
