Holden Cruze 2013: Locked steering

Asked by Peter

I've always read your articles with people having issues with their cars and never thought I would need to contact you! My 2013 SRIV Holden Cruze had trouble starting.Last Thursday night it had enough and would not kick over. Fast forward to yesterday when Brighton Holden called me to tell that my steering column locking mechanism was the issue and need to change my steering column. I could not believe this. Never in my 25 years of driving have ever had to do this. I had an amazing 2002 Caprice Series II used as a limo which was driven all the time and never needed anything not even a light bulb. Now this Cruze which I hardly drive and only done 48K KMS need a new steering column. I have contacted Holden as I do not believe I should pay for a faulty part. Do you have any advice for me?

I can certainly understand your frustration. This sounds like a reasonably common issue with the Cruze however, which along with the fact that your vehicle is now undrivable could stand you in good stead for a no-cost or at least discounted replacement outside the factory warranty period

My advice is to be the squeaky wheel until the issue is resolved.

Follow up:

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks for your reply. I bought this car because the Commodore was bigger and more expensive. Holden have agreed for me to pay $320 instead of $590. Which is not bad but I feel it is not about the money but that this is a poorly made part. I've also asked them to reset my transmission as this gets a bit rough.

Thanks again,

Peter
