Lord of the rings

Asked by Graeme Ross

I refer to the question raised by Martin Aquilira in Carsguide, January 2, about pinging in his 1993 EB Falcon V8. I had the same problem in a 1994 ED Futura V8 which, after many de-cokings of the heads over three years and 80,000km, was eventually found to be caused by faulty oil control rings. Ford eventually rebuilt the engine under warranty. He needs to be aware that altering the timing will only conceal the underlying problem and lead to reduced power, excessive fuel consumption and massive overheating of the exhaust system that can be felt radiating through the floor pan. It is a manufacturing fault that Ford should rectify.

Thanks Graeme, hopefully that will help Martin solve his problem.
