Mazda 3: High idle speed

Asked by Micheal

Our Mazda 3 is only two months old, but I am concerned with the starting. When the engine is cold it immediately revs to 1500 rpm, for a period of 20-25 seconds, before the revs drop back to 800 rpm, where it idles. Mazda assures me that this is normal, and that it cannot be adjusted, although I know that it is not normal for all other cars. I am concerned about how this high revving will affect the life of the engine.

It’s not unusual for a car to do that on a cold start. That’s the way it has been calibrated and it won’t affect the life of the engine.
