Mystery Shudder

Asked by Sam Boyle

WHILE driving my 2001 fuel-injected 1.6-litre automatic Ford Laser, the engine speed drops suddenly and the car stops. It sometimes happens while waiting at traffic lights when the engine will start to shake. When it happens the revs drop to 200-250 revs. I have serviced the transmission, replaced the fuel filter, and lubricated the coils of the spark plugs, but nothing helped. What else can I do?

You need to have it checked by a mechanic with diagnostic equipment. It could be the fuel injectors simply needing a clean, or an engine sensor malfunctioning, or several other things that can only be checked by a mechanic with the right equipment.
