Asked by Shannon Shepherdson
I own a 2001 Toyota Hilux dual-cab ute with a 2.7-litre petrol engine and auto trans, which use it to go to the nursery and regularly buy large bags of cow manure and potting mix. I also have two Border Collies that I take out to the park five days a week and they travel in the back. One night a week I have them on the back seat of the car when I take them to the dog club. I have a specially made canvas cover on the seat to protect it from doggy paws. Occasionally I use the car on long trips. The car has done 355,000 km. It has been serviced regularly ever since I have had it, and I have never had any trouble with it. My husband has a 1978 HZ Holden ute, which he uses for work. It is getting a few problems and is not running well, and our mechanic says to get rid of it. My husband wants to keep it even if he doesn't use it. He would then take over my car and use it instead. So I am looking for a car to replace mine. So far I have driven the Toyota RAV4 and it is way too big for me, or that is how it feels when I drive it. Also the Toyota Corolla, too small and tinny, Hyundai wagon, also too small and tinny. They both seem to rev too high and they are not particularly smooth to drive. Ideally I would like a station wagon, 2.0-litre that is cheap to run and service and the parts don't cost the earth. I want to keep the next car for a very long time too. I have been looking around but can't seem to find anything suitable. I quite liked the Prius V but not keen on spending $3000 on a new battery every 10 years. I also liked the look of the Toyota Corolla Station Wagon but they stopped making those in 2006. Could you please give me some advice?

15 Apr 2016It seems to me your answer lies in what you wrote at the beginning of your email. Why not buy another Hilux, it did the job for you before and there's no reason it wouldn't do the same again.
