Parts not covered under extended warranty?

Asked by Bronwyn Harrison

I purchased a 2011 Mazda6 in Dec 2011 and took an extended warranty with Mazda. My driver's seat is broken and I was advised that the full seat mechanism would need replacing at a cost of $4010, and that this would not be covered by the extended warranty. I asked what would have caused this, and it was suggested perhaps faulty welding. I am struggling to comprehend the cost and the purpose of the extended warranty. I purchased the car and have had serviced it through a Mazda dealer. What can I do?

That seems like a lot of money to replace the seat mechanism, perhaps you could try an independent Mazda mechanic and replace it with used parts. That would save you some money. As for the extended warranty, you should read it and understand what is covered and what is not. The warranty is generally not from the carmaker directly, but from an insurance company and sold through the dealer. If it is correct that the failure was due to faulty welding, as you say it was suggested, then it's a problem for Mazda itself to fix.
