Nissan Patrol 2011: Poor power in 2nd gear

Asked by Dave Duncan

My 2011 3.0-litre turbo-diesel auto Nissan Patrol has exhibited very poor power in second gear when towing my 2200 kg caravan up hills from new. My previous Patrol, also a 3.0-litre diesel auto, would pull the van up these hills with comparative ease, and I was able to drive another similar Patrol and it also negotiated the hills in question with ease. I have had a dyno test performed, which showed a maximum of 80 kW at 3700 rpm and 270 Nm at 2100 rpm. Nissan HQ says that there are too many variables for these figures to be of any use, but my dyno man disputes this claim. My dealer has performed all tests in conjunction with Nissan and says all is fine, and Nissan has now instructed the dealer to not perform any more work on the problem. I have offered to take a dealer rep for a drive to show problem actually exists, but they say they are unable to do that, because the local hills are out of their territory! To make matters worse this vehicle consistently uses about 21 L/100 km, whereas my previous one returned about 17 L/100 km. What can I do?

The solution has to come from Nissan, so that's where you need to direct your concerns. I would seek a meeting with the dealer and express your concerns directly to the service manager, and request that a Nissan factory rep drive your car. Go along on the ride as well. The fact that your car is using more fuel than it should suggests that it is down on power.
