I'M THINKING about buying a Subaru Liberty B4, but have heard of reliability issues with the twin turbo set-up. Apparently they pinged badly even from new on 98 octane fuel. I have noticed that a couple of secondhand B4s are for sale with recon engines. Are you any the wiser about the issue?

20 Apr 2006ACCORDING to Subaru there are no problems with pinging if you use good-quality 98 RON fuel in unmodified engines. A few primary turbos have been replaced because of seizure of the exhaust control valve that redirects exhaust gases/energy to the secondary turbo. Make sure you use good-quality fuel that is fresh. Mobil and BP are two that appear to have a decent shelf life.
