Reliability of Viva timing belts or chains?

Asked by Terry Egberts

Just inquiring about the reliability of timing belts or chains and your thoughts about a 2005 Holden Viva auto wagon with 90,000km. Would it be suitable as commuter car doing 600km a week, mainly freeway?

Regardless of the engine work, the Viva is not a good car. For similar money, in a small wagon, I'd go every time for a Mitsubishi Lancer.
