WE USED our 2001 3.0-litre turbo diesel Nissan Patrol GUII on a recent caravan trip. After 17,500km, numbers three and four pistons burned. The vehicle had been regularly serviced by Nissan dealers up to the time of the failure. My Nissan dealer told me this was unusual and repairs would cost up to $10,000. After I complained, Nissan said it would do a "sympathy" repair and I'd pay for parts used. I found it strange that Nissan has a kit all ready to repair this problem. If it's aware of the problem and corrects it at it's own expense, it should be responsible for all my costs resulting from the breakdown.

6 Jul 2006THE 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine had problems early on that Nissan claims were fixed by the revised dipstick and extra oil fill. Yours should have had that fix, but it's worth checking that with your dealer. The problem seems to be worse when highway driving, and becomes worse still when towing or at high temperatures. It was thought to be a piston-cooling problem, and the extra oil fixed that. But there are reports of failures of the mass airflow sensor, which seems to tell the engine computer to run the engine lean.
