Nissan Patrol 2000: Is the 3.0-litre turbo diesel good for towing?

Asked by Hilton Brown

WE ARE retired and on a pension, and now tow a 5.2m caravan weighing about 2000kg loaded, using a 1993 Patrol 4.2-litre diesel automatic with an aftermarket turbo and oil cooler. We have owned it since new, but it now has 260,000km on the clock and we have been thinking of updating to a 2000-plus model. Would a 3.0-litre diesel, or smaller, be adequate?

YOU could tow your outfit with a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel, but I couldn't recommend the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel GU Patrol because there are too many reports of engine problems. They seem to have problems running at high loads on the highway. See this week's used cars report.
