I am interested in getting a Toyota FJ Cruiser, but because of the lack of a diesel option would like to get it converted to run on LPG. My research has found that it has been successfully done, as the vehicle is based on the 4.0-litre V6 Prado running gear. Two respected local gas conversion companies have told me that it would cost around $4000 and I understand that I can claim up to $2000 of that back through a government scheme. I am looking at a novated lease on this vehicle, but the company I have to deal with tell me that they have been told by Toyota that the conversion would void the factory warranty. Both installers I have spoken to tell me that the installation is covered by its own 3-year/100,000 km warranty anyway. Who do I believe?

23 Feb 2012Our understanding is that the government grant you refer to is not available on a novated lease, so you should go back and check that. Generally carmakers do not void the entire new vehicle warranty when an LPG system is installed, but they do exclude from the warranty any part of the car affected by the installation. That means the engine, the fuel system, etc. is not covered, but the warranty remains in place for the rest of the car. LPG systems are generally covered by a warranty that covers the system itself and its components, and there are also a number of insurance companies offering LPG warranty packages, which specifically cover potential engine damage, for people concerned about premature engine failure. Your LPG installer can give you the warranty information relating to the system you are planning to install. With reference to the FJ Cruiser, the LPG system manufacturers maintain a list of vehicles that should not be converted to LPG and the FJ Cruiser is not on that list.
