You might recall last year running my story on the HiLux transmission overheating light issue. The response to the story showed it wasn't an isolated case as Toyota had said. As a final update of the story I towed my caravan to Queensland late last year, but before leaving I had a transmission oil cooler fitted. I traveled 6000 km going back and forth over the "Great Divide" and did not have one ounce of trouble and was very pleased with the advice and feedback from your readers. My only complaint is that I had to spend the extra money to bring the car up to the standard it should have been in when I bought it, but the peace of mind was worth it. Then after the trip Toyota had my dealer replace the transmission ECU with a new updated one, as they believed this was the "fix" for the transmission overheating light. I don't expect now to have any more trouble, but I would advise anybody with the same problem to fit a transmission cooler even though the ECU may have been replaced.

13 Jan 2011Good advice for anyone suffering the same problem with the Hilux auto. Take it back to the dealer and have the ECU updated, Toyota has obviously found a fix for the problem, and as we have often advised fitting a transmission oil cooler is a wise move if you're doing a lot of towing.
