Mitsubishi Outlander 2007: Can it tow a caravan?

Asked by Georg Trzesinski, e-mail.

I recently purchased an 18-foot full-sized caravan and would like to tow it with my 2007 V6 Mitsubishi Outlander VRX. According to the owner's manual the Outlander is rated to tow 1600 kg caravan, but the caravan weighs 2-tonne fully loaded. Would the extra 400 kg will do any damage, create issues with insurance, or should I look for another car?

Exceeding the recommended weight is not advisable, the extra 400 kg will very likely adversely impact on the life of the engine, the transmission, it could cause overheating problems, and there could be issues with the suspension and tyres. It is also likely to cause problems with your insurance company and the law. Find another car or another caravan.
