What's a safe first car?

Asked by Erin

I am a student looking for my first car. I'm currently undecided between a secondhand 2014 VW Polo 66TSI with 45,000 km at $12,000, a new Mazda 2 or Toyota Yaris with AEB. Safety is my priority, followed by the overall cost of the car, servicing included. I'm also considering that I'll want to sell the car after 5 years. Which car should I take?

I wouldn't recommend the Polo, it requires the more expensive Premium unleaded, it's got the dual-clutch auto, which can be troublesome, and it will be more expensive to service. The Mazda 2 or the Toyota Yaris are better choices.
