VW has given its T6 line-up a comprehensive overhaul, from the classic Transporter work van to the Caravelle people-mover.
All models have a sharper look and better cabin, as well as more efficient engines that use less fuel and cost less to run.
Fuel-saving stop-start technology is standard and a swag of driver assistance features is either standard or optional. The T6 is also a more comfortable and convenient vehicle to work or travel in.
Some models have adaptive chassis control that allows the driver to dial in the preferred mode, ranging from comfort to more sporty. To top it off, power adjustable seats are available on the more expensive passenger variants.
As with other brands, VW takes the connectivity path with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink apps.
Transporters continue in two basic categories — the commercial vehicles (van, crew van, single and dual cab) and the passenger carriers, Multivan and Caravelle.
Two wheelbases and three roof heights (in van and crew van only) add to flexibility and functionality.
There is a new generation turbo diesel, designated TDI450 and developed specifically for longevity and ruggedness in commercial vehicle applications.
Transmission options are six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG, the latter available in Mulitvan and Caravelle with sport mode and manual shift function. Across the range, models use about 0.5L less per 100km.
Engines are mounted transversely and angled forward by eight degrees, mainly driving the front wheels. There are AWD variants of the TDI450 Highline and TDI400 Transporter.
The T6 maintains styling links to the earlier model but is a completely new design inside and out. Versatile interiors enable maximum load capacity and there is easy access.
VW has integrated a wide array of "intelligent" driver assistance. An electronic diff lock and stability control are standard across the range, and other aids include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control (available only in Multivan with TDI450), driver fatigue alert and post-collision braking.
The exterior update reflects more modern design cues while interior design incorporates many passenger car features and styling. Standard kit is generous from the base model up but VW has numerous option packages.
