2017 Hyundai i30 wagon no go for Oz

Although Hyundai is yet to reveal its new-generation i30 in wagon guise – due to be unveiled at next month's Geneva motor show – Australia will miss out on the new load-lugging small car due to the country's growing appetite for SUVs.

According to Hyundai Australia PR manager Guido Schenken, the brand's upcoming, as-yet-unseen, small SUV will likely fill the niche for customers after a practical small vehicle.

"The car (i30 wagon) is only built in Europe and it's quite a small market for that vehicle, we think our small SUV, which is coming this year, will be a lot more relevant for this market," he said.

"It's still highly unlikely that we'll take the car (i30 wagon)."

Hyundai Australia discontinued the second-generation i30 wagon last June as a result of the high costs involved in importing the vehicle from the Czech Republic, while its five-door hatchback sibling is sourced from South Korea and will launch in new-generation guise by mid-year.

The shadowy teaser image released by Hyundai reveals little save for a new swoopy D-pillar design and what will likely be the same headlights as its third-generation hatchback sibling, which was revealed during last year's Paris motor show.

A subtle roof spoiler is also visible, as well understated roof racks and chrome or silver detailing around the side glasshouse.

In terms of the niche small wagon offerings in Australia, only Peugeot and Volkswagen sell their 308 and Golf in load-lugging bodystyles, while Renault is set to introduce its Megane wagon sometime in 2017.

More technical information, including a full reveal, is set for the opening day of the Geneva motor show on March 7.
