2021 Volvo S60 and V60 pricing and specs detailed: BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class rivals lose hybrid flagships

Volvo Australia has rejigged its mid-size car line-up for MY21, with the S60 sedan and V60 wagon getting better-equipped entry-level variants – at a cost – and losing their slow-selling plug-in hybrid (PHEV) flagships.

The entry-level T5 Momentum has gone up by $1000 in both instances, with the S60 version now priced from $55,990, while its V60 counterpart continues to command a $2000 premium.

For the extra spend, buyers are compensated with the standard fitment of active bending LED headlights, high-level interior ambient lighting and a load hook parcel area (S60) or a grocery bag holder (V60).

The mid-range T5 Inscription and range-topping T5 R-Design are unchanged in both pricing and specification, still checking in from $60,990 and $64,990 in S60 form respectively, while their V60 siblings cost a familiar $2000 more.

All three T5 variants are powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, with the Momentum and Inscription producing 187kW/350Nm, while the R-Design develops 192kW/400Nm.

Either way, all versions of the S60 and V60 are mated to an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system.

As mentioned, the previously flagship T8 R-Design PHEV is no longer available, with a Volvo Australia spokesperson telling CarsGuide its discontinuation in both S60 and V60 guises was prompted by low sales.

“The current success of our SUVs is outweighing that of our sedan and wagon range. To that end, we have decided to streamline our product line-up – even more – and focus on the best-performing variants,” they said.

As reported, the T8 R-Design added a supercharger to the T5 engine to boost outputs to 246kW/430Nm, while a 65kW/240Nm electric motor worked in tandem with this unit to deliver a combined 311kW/680Nm. It was priced from $85,990 or $87,990.
