2022 Hyundai Casper detailed: Could this new SUV replace Getz and take the fight to Suzuki's Ignis as the brand's most affordable model?

The return of the Getz? Maybe for some markets, but for now this friendly ghost isn't headed to Australia.

Hyundai has thrown the covers of a new micro-SUV which will globally slot into its lineup below the Venue crossover.

Set to hit the streets in its Korean home market imminently, the Casper lines up in size-class similar to the Suzuki Ignis.

Sporting a retro-look grille design and a contemporary squared-off roofline to keep it inline with its larger Venue sibling, the Casper will be available in its home market with the choice of two engines, a 1.0-litre multi-point injected petrol or a 1.0-litre direct-injection turbo.

Inside, the Casper appears to offer a large multimedia screen, and higher specs at least appear to be available with large alloys and even a sunroof.

Little else is known about the city-sized SUV, with full specs to be revealed before month’s end, with Korean customers only able to place a submission of interest.

The Casper is understood to be headed to the Indian market where it has been seen testing under camouflage for some time and will likely exported to South East Asia, but Hyundai Australia has confirmed to CarsGuide the mini SUV is not on the radar for the Australian market.

The funky mini-SUV is not on Hyundai Australia's radar for now. The funky mini-SUV is not on Hyundai Australia's radar for now.

It is as yet unclear whether this is because the right-hand-drive India market model, which is yet to be detailed, will not have the prerequisite safety features required for our market.

Although the micro segment is small in Australia, consisting of just the Kia Picanto, Fiat 500 and Suzuki Ignis, the Casper could represent a way for the brand to once again offer a vehicle in the sub-$20k region, which it has abandoned since dropping the Accent hatch.

The most affordable vehicle currently offered by Hyundai in Australia is the Venue Active Manual, which wears a before-on-road cost (MSRP) of $22,870.

In comparison the base manual Ignis can be had from $19,490, and the base Kia Picanto S manual starts at just $15,690.

In Korea, the Casper will offer a city-sized alternative to the Kia Ray city MPV also currently not offered in Australia.
