2022 Mercedes-Benz CLS detailed: Coupe-style BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF rival gets facelift with cutting-edge technology

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the facelifted version of the third-generation CLS large sedan, with the coupe-style model due in Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of this year.

Much like the related fifth-generation E-Class, the latest CLS has been treated to redesigned front bumpers and alloy wheels. And when it comes to the fresh grilles, the CLS53 flagship now has Mercedes-AMG’s signature Panamericana insert.

While the CLS does go it alone by sticking with its existing headlights and tail-lights, it does closely follow the E-Class’ lead inside, where Mercedes’ MBUX multimedia system has replaced the previous Comand software, with the rotary dial disappearing in the process.

That said, the new set-up can be controlled by the centre console’s redesigned touchpad as well as the fresh steering wheel, which has capacitive buttons to operate the digital instrument cluster and central touchscreen.

Two-tone leather upholstery options now include Neva Grey/Magma Grey and Sienna Brown/black, while open-pore Brown Walnut and high-gloss Grey Wood are new trim choices.

Local engine options are yet to be confirmed, but the petrol-powered CLS350 and CLS450 are likely to carry over alongside the aforementioned CLS53, all of which are mated to a nine-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

For reference, the rear-wheel-drive CLS350 is motivated by a 220kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the all-wheel-drive CLS450 uses a 270kW/500Nm 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder unit with a 16kW/250Nm integrated starter-generator.

The CLS53 uses the same combination as the CLS450, although it adds an ‘electric turbocharger’ to boost engine outputs to 320kW/520Nm. Its AWD system is also of the fully variable 4Matic+ variety.

Pricing and full specification details for the updated BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF rival will be released closer to its launch, so stay tuned. For reference, the pre-facelift model is currently priced from $142,835 to $189,100 plus on-road costs.
