An all-new MG SUV, dubbed the One in its home market of China, has been leaked thanks to documents filed with the Ministry of Industry, with it wearing the brand’s new styling language seen by other new Chinese domestic market models like the MG5 and MG Pilot.
The new SUV is longer but narrower and shorter than the current HS halo model in Australia, measuring 4579mm long, 1866mm wide and 1601mm tall. It also has a shorter wheelbase and a more coupe-style roofline.
The One is also available with a long list of more style-focused accessories, like coloured bumpers, spoilers and highlight trims, and is also available with three alloy wheel designs (in 17- 18- or 19-inch sizes) and bumper claddings, suggesting at least three spec levels.
According to the documents, the MG One is set to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine outputting 133kW. No torque figure is given, but the engine is likely a variant of the same General Motors-derived ‘LFV’ engine which powers the current HS and produces 135kW/285Nm in the current MG6.
No other specs appear as yet, but it seems likely the One will be predominantly front wheel driven by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic like its siblings. Given the Chinese government’s increasingly strict ‘New Energy’ electrification policies, we wouldn’t be surprised to also see a plug-in hybrid variant similar to the current MG HS PHEV in the near future. We would also expect the One to have the full ‘MG Pilot’ active safety suite.
The MG One looks to pack two-tone styling options and various aesthetic accessories.
The One will add to MG’s busy SUV global line-up, which now consists of two versions of the ZS in the same small SUV bracket, and now the current HS, Pilot and now One all in the mid-size SUV segment. It is not unusual to see old models sold alongside new ones in China, however given the HS’ older styling language, it would not be surprising to see it ultimately replaced by the Pilot and One pair.
A spokesperson for MG Australia told CarsGuide it had nothing to announce regarding the One for the time being, but reiterated that “everything is on the table for the Australian market”, and also that the brand would predominantly be “focused on the EV space” in the near future, including moving into the charging infrastructure space and hinting at the potential for vehicles like the Marvel R dedicated EV.
The MG One looks to be available in at least three spec levels, although only one engine option has been leaked for now.
MG now offers four new products in its home market with the “third generation” styling language: the Pilot and One mid-size SUVs, MG5 small sedan, and MG6 mid-size sedan, although none have yet been earmarked for an Australian release by the local division.
