2023 Genesis G80 Electrified price and features: Flagship electric car takes aim at Tesla Model S, Mercedes EQE, and Audi e-Tron GT

A luxury sedan with 800 volts and a solar panel?

Genesis has released indicative pricing and specs for its upcoming fully electric large sedan, the G80 Electrified.

The full-electric version of the G80 will take its place above the current range-topping G80 3.5T AWD, with Genesis offering an indicative price-tag between $140,000 and $150,000.

While pricing is not yet announced for its most direct rival, the Mercedes-Benz EQE, the new Genesis will also represent a challenge to the Tesla Model S (expected to cost from $162,559 before on-road costs when the updated Long Range variant arrives) and Audi e-Tron GT (from $171,900).

The G80 Electrified and its GV70 Electrified relation are notable for their 800-volt battery architecture, allowing the G80 ultra-rapid charging of 10-80 per cent in under 25 minutes. It can travel over 500km on a single charge thanks to its relatively large 87.2kWh battery pack.

Both models also bring with them two-way (V2L) charging via the European Type 2 CCS charging port. Unlike the GV70, the G80 Electrified can only offer this feature externally as there is no full-size household power outlet in the cabin.

The G80 electrified is all-wheel-drive only and can produce up to 272kW/700Nm. It does not have the same ‘boost mode’ as the GV70 Electrified and does not have a bespoke Australian suspension tune, but Genesis’ local division said the best choice of global suspension parts were chosen for Australian road conditions regardless.

Genesis Australia said it had chosen the best possible global suspension tune for the Australian market for the G80 Electrified. Genesis Australia said it had chosen the best possible global suspension tune for the Australian market for the G80 Electrified.

Standard features include full leather interior trim, 19-inch alloy wheels with a unique design, a 14.5-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, augmented reality navigation, ‘Road Preview’ electronic adaptive suspension, a 21-speaker premium audio system, a digital instrument cluster, 12.0-inch head-up display, keyless entry with push-start ignition, multimedia screens for rear passengers, heated and ventilated front seats with heated outboard rear seats, full LED lighting inside and out, and a solar panel in place of a sunroof.

The solar panel is connected to the high-voltage battery and is said to be able to trickle charge the car slowly. Genesis representatives told CarsGuide it is a major feature often touched on by consumers.

The G80 Electrified also has a significantly smaller boot capacity than its combustion versions thanks to its lower form factor, and is offered with the choice of its own paint colour ‘Electrified Matira Blue’. It will also feature the full suite of active safety items available elsewhere in the G80 range.

The G80 Electrified will arrive in just one high-spec trim level. The G80 Electrified will arrive in just one high-spec trim level.

The G80 and GV70 Electrified models will arrive in Q3 of 2022 and will be joined by the GV60 dedicated EV around that time as well. Stay tuned for more accurate pricing closer to the arrival of the G80 Electrified.
