2023 GWM Tank 300 hybrid off-roader now on sale in Australia

The 2023 GWM Tank 300 hybrid 4x4 is now on sale in Australia with the Chinese brand offering two variants of the off-roader, both with pricing designed to put the fear into the Jeep Wrangler.

The Tank 300, in its entry level Lux variant, kicks off from $55,990 drive-away, while another slightly better equipped variant called Ultra is available from $60,990 drive-away.

For reference, the Jeep Wrangler currently starts from $81,450 before on-road costs after significant price increases over the last couple of years, before which its pricing would have been competitive with the GWM Tank 300.

Both variants of the Tank 300 hybrid are powered by the same drivetrain - a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine making  180kW and 380Nm, with a hybrid electric motor assisting which, according to previously announced specs, gives a total system output of 224kW/640Nm. CarsGuide has contacted GWM to confirm the Australian combined output.

GWM hasn’t specified why the outputs are significantly lower for Australia.

In terms of off-roading and workhorse capabilities, the Tank 300 has a 2500kg towing capacity and 224mm of ground clearance, with approach and departure angles of 33 degrees and 34 degrees respectively.

Inside, the Lux gets a standard equipment list featuring leather seats, a 12.3-inch multimedia screen, a sunroof, and a tyre pressure monitor.

Stepping up to the Ultra nets a set of 18-inch alloys to replaces the 17s, as well as higher grade Nappa leather seats which are heated and ventilated, plus have a massage function. A wireless charging pad and upgraded sound system with nine speakers also features.

The Ultra also gains a front differential lock over the Lux.
