Are baby boomers better drivers than millennials?

Around three quarters of baby boomers would rate their own driving ability as very good or advanced.

A recent study conducted by Gumtree Cars has found a generational divide in regards to Australian car ownership habits.

The research pertains to car buying and ownership trends between both millennials and baby boomers, with the latter group showing more confidence in both areas.

According to the findings, 74 per cent of baby boomers would rate their own driving ability as very good or advanced, as opposed to just 65 per cent by millennials.

However, 30 per cent of millennials are likely to rate other road users highly, while only 14 per cent of baby boomers are shown to rate others as very good/advanced drivers.

More than two thirds of millennials surveyed (67%) say they are least knowledgeable when it comes to making an informed decision to buy a car, while the majority of baby boomers (79%) are confident.

When it comes to car purchasing satisfaction, 45 per cent of 18-24 year old buyers say they are excited by the experience, whereas just 25 per cent of baby boomers say they enjoy the process.

Thanks to the internet, information is more readily available, so buyers spend an average of six weeks researching before entering a dealership or taking a test drive.

Less than one third (29 per cent) of 18-34 year old buyers use social media to browse vehicles, compared to only three per cent by over-55s.

According to Gumtree Cars, consumers are willing to travel an average of 65 kilometres to save $500 on a car purchase, 120km to save $1000 and 280km to save $1500.

Customers in Queensland and Western Australia are most willing to travel to save money on their next car.

When surveyed about negotiating for a better price, 23 per cent of millennials said they would be very confident to haggle, compared to 21 per cent of baby boomers.
