Audi A3 2020 pricing and spec confirmed: Higher entry point for luxury small car line-up

Audi’s A3 line-up has been slightly tweaked with added equipment and cost ahead of the new-generation version being possibly revealed before year’s end.

The base A3 30 TFSI S tronic has now been discontinued, which cost $36,600 before on-road costs, leaving the 35 TFSI S tronic-replacing 35 TFSI S line to open the premium small car range.

Kicking off at $43,300, the base five-door hatchback is now $2600 more expensive than its predecessor, but – as its name suggests – adds an S line exterior bodykit with 18-inch wheels as standard.

Power still comes from a 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, which drives the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Inside, the new entry-level A3 sports Audi’s virtual cockpit digital instrumentation and MMI Navigation plus multimedia system as standard, as well as keyless entry.

The cheapest A3 is also equipped with autonomous emergency braking, reversing camera and blind-spot monitoring for no extra charge.

Meanwhile, the 40 TFSI S line grade, which is powered by a 140kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, moves up $2500 to $49,300.

The all-wheel-drive quattro version with the same engine also steps up $2500 to $52,900.

The A3 will continue to be offer as a hatchback, sedan and convertible.

Both 40 TFSI variants also add the S line body kit and 18-inch wheels as standard, while specification is also lifted thanks to LED head- and tail-lights, electronic front seat adjustment, heated front pews, auto-folding mirrors and wireless smartphone charger.

The 40 TFSI quattro S line also gains a panoramic sunroof in hatchback and sedan body styles, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and digital radio.

Sedan versions are also move up in price and specification in line with their hatchback equivalents at $44,900, $50,900 and $54,500 for the 35, 40 and 40 quattro variants respectively.

Similarly, the Cabriolet body style gains the same upgrades and price increases, with the 35, 40 and 40 quattro costing $52,400, $58,400 and $62,000 each.

As for the sporty S3 versions, which are powered by a 213kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo four, pricing and specification remains unchanged for the $64,200 Sportback, $65,800 Sedan and $73,400 Cabriolet.

As previously mentioned, the new A3 is expected to break cover soon after the reveal of the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf, with both models sharing the same underpinnings.

With the VW Golf set for an October 24 reveal and late 2020 arrival in Australian showrooms, it will likely be early 2021 before the next Audi A3 lands Down Under.
