Isuzu's MU-X is soon to be replaced with an all-new version, meaning the current model can be had for as little as $46,990.

The not-so subtle distinction between an SUV and a 4x4 is that both can head beyond the black stump, but only one will come back.

For buyers wanting space, durability and a dominant seating altitude, the SUV is a good fit for a family. For those wanting to explore, see the country away from bitumen and tow a caravan, the more traditional 4x4 is often the only weapon of choice.

Here’s some of the toughest 4x4s on the market with some very enticing deals courtesy of the end of the 2020 financial year.

The savings are impressive - up to $10,600 - but you’d better hurry because they’re only available today and the weekend in the lead up to the end of this month.

Isuzu MU-X

The top-spec LS-T gets $9275 ripped off its sticker price.

The MU-X will get an all new model soon, tipped to be revealed later this year, so for grey nomads and people who want a durable off-road machine at an unbeatable price, now is the time to talk to your nearest dealer.

The entry-level MU-X wagon in LS-M 4x4 trim with automatic transmission and seven seats has been slashed by a huge $10,648. The LS-M is now $46,990 drive-away, a saving equivalent to 18.5 per cent.

The more upmarket LS-U is also heavily discounted, selling now for $50,990 drive-away which is $9204 off its normal price.

The top-spec LS-T gets $9275 ripped off its sticker price, on sale this month for $54,990 to save 14.4 per cent. It comes with extra gear including leather upholstery, sat-nav and electric driver’s seat adjustment.

Mitsubishi Pajero

The Pajero excels in offering as much off-road ability as anybody is ever likely to demand.

Another 4x4 brand slicing away at its regular prices is Mitsubishi. Its long-standing big 4x4 seven-seat wagon, the Pajero, now starts at $50,490 for the GLX, a huge $10,185 or 16.8 per cent off the normal price.

But there’s more. Mitsubishi will throw in a $1500 discount on that price and add a seven-year or 150,000km warranty. Hard to go wrong here.

The GLS version has leather, park sensors and premium audio and is now $57,490 drive-away, saving $9042 or 13.6 per cent.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

The seven-seat Exceed with all the fruit has been discounted to $59,990.

Mitsubishi also has its slightly smaller Pajero Sport model on the block. The five-seat GLX with eight-speed automatic and 4x4 with low-range gearing has been reduced by $7096 to $45,990 drive-away and with the extra $1500 bonus added plus the long warranty.

The GLS five-seat is $52,490 with the on-road costs, cash back and long warranty, saving $5463. If you need more seats, the seven-seat GLS is $53,990, saving $5028.

The seven-seat Exceed with all the fruit has been discounted to $59,990, a chop of 6.3 per cent or $4033. It also gets all the bonus savings and warranty in its drive-away pricing.

Ford Everest

The Everest Trend comes with five years of free scheduled servicing.

Ford has some decent deals on its Everest, the 4x4 wagon version of the Ranger ute. The Trend version with 3.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, automatic transmission and seven seats is $60,990 drive-away, saving $6070.

It also lures buyers with up to five years or 75,000km of free scheduled servicing. That alone saves about $1700.

The Everest Trend has more gear and is now $63,990 drive-away and with the free service deal, a saving of about $7000.

Land Rover Discovery

The Discovery SD4 S 4x4 auto is now $83,148 drive-away. (SD4 HSE model shown)

Land Rover has offered savings on its entire range equivalent to the GST - so, 10 per cent - from the normal price.

An example is the Discovery SD4 S 4x4 auto with the twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine. It’s now $83,148 drive-away. The P200 4x4 S is also reduced, now $68,566 including on-road costs.

Toyota LandCruiser Prado

The Prado GXL seven-seater now $65,990 drive-away.

Toyota has applied some attractive discounts to its heavyweight 4x4 wagons, with the Prado GXL seven-seater now $65,990 drive-away, saving $4371 on the normal price.

Toyota Fortuner

The flagship Crusade is priced at is $58,990 drive-away.

There is also the Hilux-based Fortuner wagon that opens at $47,990 drive-away for the seven seat GX. That’s a saving of $3342, while the GXL, that adds features such as sat-nav and digital radio, is $51,990 which represents an 8.2 per cent cut or $4633.

The flagship Crusade - with leather, LED headlights and premium audio - is $58,990 drive-away, cutting $5620 from the normal price.
